Congratulations! You’re engaged and busy planning the wedding of your dreams. With so many decisions to make, how do you choose a wedding cake that will live up to your vision for your big day. When it comes to wedding cakes, there is so much choice! Don’t worry we’ve put together 5 top tips to help you choose your perfect wedding cake.
Give yourself plenty of time
Most good wedding cake makers are booked up many months and even years in advance. We recommend booking your cake maker at least 12 months prior to your wedding, especially for summer weddings, when cake makers are especially busy. Don’t leave choosing your wedding cake until the last minute. You could end up disappointed.
Finding the right wedding cake maker for you
Finding the right wedding cake maker is so important. Do your research. Ask friends for recommendation. Does your venue have a list of preferred suppliers who they know and trust? Check out their portfolio to get a feel for their signature style. Always make sure you choose a wedding cake designer that specialises in the type of cake you are looking for, such as elegant, contemporary, rustic or novelty. Look at Google reviews, Facebook reviews and testimonials. Ask your preferred cake maker for a consultation so you can see examples of their work and really get a feel for whether they are right for you.
Choose your flavours
Gone are the days when traditional fruit or vanilla sponge were your only options for wedding cake flavours. Today the possibilities are endless. Popular flavours include salted caramel, raspberry and white chocolate and strawberry and prosecco. Always ensure that you get to sample some flavours before your big day. Also, consider the time of year you are getting married. A nice light lemon and elderflower cake is a perfect choice for a summer wedding whereas a spicy ginger cake is great in the autumn or winter.
A wedding cake should bring all the elements of your wedding together. Consider the type of venue you have – barn, country house, hotel etc. Think about the colours you are using and perhaps incorporate these into the design. Elements of the bride’s dress such as lace, can be incorporated. Flowers can be matched to those in your bouquet. If you have an emblem or monogram on your stationery, your cakemaker can reproduce on your cake. A good cake maker will have a creative eye and be able to help you to decide on a unique design that is perfect for your wedding.
There’s a saying “Good cake isn’t cheap, and cheap cake isn’t good” and this is so true. Do some research and set yourself a reasonable budget to get your dream wedding cake. Cake makers need to have an idea of budget before we design your cake with you so we don’t both get carried away at the consultation designing a spectacular all singing all dancing 5 tier cake when your budget is for 3 tiers
Choosing your perfect wedding cake is not always easy but a professional cake maker who has lots of experience and is creative, can guide you through the process and make the whole experience enjoyable and stress free.
